Why calcATAR Exists
Every year, hundreds of thousands of Australian Year 12 students try to estimate their ATAR before results day. They search for calculators online and find tools that are outdated, cover only one state, or are buried inside tutoring company websites that exist mainly to sell courses.
calcATAR was built to solve that problem. One website. All eight states. Free. Accurate. No sign-ups, no fees, no hidden upsells.
Whether you are a VCE student in Victoria, an HSC student in New South Wales, a QCE student in Queensland, or studying under the WACE, SACE, TCE, or BSSS system — calcATAR gives you an estimated ATAR score based on the latest available scaling data from your state’s official admissions centre.
How Our Calculators Work
Each state’s ATAR calculation system works differently, but the core process is the same:
1. You enter your subjects and your actual or predicted study scores.
2. Our tool applies the official scaling factors published by your state’s admissions centre — adjusting each subject’s score based on the strength of that year’s cohort.
3. The scaled scores are aggregated according to your state’s specific rules (which subjects count, what percentage each contributes).
4. The aggregate is mapped to an ATAR using the official distribution table.

Our Data Sources
We take accuracy seriously. Our scaling data comes directly from official published reports:
— Victoria (VCE): VTAC Scaling Report, published annually by the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre
— New South Wales (HSC): UAC Annual Report and scaling data from the Universities Admissions Centre
— Queensland (QCE): QTAC quintile tables from the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre
— Western Australia (WACE): TISC and SCSA published data from the Tertiary Institutions Service Centre
— South Australia & Northern Territory (SACE/NTCET): SATAC data from the South Australian Tertiary Admissions Centre
— Tasmania (TCE): TASC data from the Office of Tasmanian Assessment, Standards and Certification
— ACT (BSSS): Data from the ACT Board of Senior Secondary Studies, with ATAR calculation through UAC

About the Founder
calcATAR was created by Daniel Mitchell, an education data analyst with a background in mathematics and data analysis. Daniel built calcATAR because he believed every Australian student deserves access to accurate, free ATAR estimation tools — regardless of whether they can afford a private tutor or attend a well-resourced school.
